ABOUT US
From 2005 to 2009, through the ActNow BC Healthy Choices in Pregnancy initiative, province wide educative work was undertaken to improve the capacity of researchers, health practitioners, service providers, decision makers and others, to more effectively respond to women with alcohol and related health concerns. The focus of this work was to increase awareness of the risks of of alcohol use in pregnancy, in particular the risk for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and to support health care providers in discussing these risks with all women of child bearing years.
In that period, the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health led this educational work through the Provincial Education and Resource Team, which included Nancy Poole (researcher and knowledge exchanger) and Cristine Urquhart (social worker and MINT trainer) and Frances Jasiura (clinical counsellor and MINT trainer).
Experts in the field, Nancy, Cristine and Frances remain available to design and facilitate training on women and substance use issues, prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Motivational Interviewing and related women’s health issues. Educational sessions are now no longer offered through the Government ActNowBC initiative, yet are available on a fee for service basis.
We appreciate the funding provided by the BC government towards the Healthy Choices in Pregnancy Initiative and hope to be able to continue to advance action on this important women’s health issue.
