Tailored consultations and facilitation

British Columbia Association of Pregnancy Outreach Programs

Pregnancy Outreach Programs (POPs) across B.C. work with women from all walks of life to address and work through a variety of difficult situations during their pregnancy and early postpartum period.

Over the years, Pregnancy Outreach Program staff have participated in numerous training opportunities offered by ActNow BC - Healthy Choices in Pregnancy. As program workers became increasingly interested in using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in their work with women, they began to see a need for program policies and procedures to also reflect MI spirit and principles.

This project’s main objective was to develop recommendations for an intake/charting tool inspired by MI - to facilitate the support work of Pregnancy Outreach Program staff on substance use issues.

HCIP educators worked with an advisory committee and program staff to determine a comprehensive approach called the Consultation Guideline. This guideline will assist staff to increase their skills and confidence in using Motivational Interviewing, and to align program policies and procedures with MI guiding principles
