Vancouver Coastal Health Authority Pilot Project

We are working with educators and managers from the Infant, Child, Youth, Adult and Older Adult programs to systematically pilot two levels of Motivational Interviewing (MI) training.

Level 1 - Introduction to Motivational Interviewing in Healthcare

This introductory, 2-day workshop is tailored to the clinical contexts of the Infant, Child, Youth, Adult and Older Adult programs.

It is designed to provide Vancouver Coastal Health staff with basic familiarity of Motivational Interviewing core concepts, clinical styles and strategies for workplace implementation. Highly-interactive and experiential, the training approach will evoke participants’ understanding of the process of change and their interest in integrating MI into practice settings.

This training is designed to strengthen empathic counselling skills; help participants learn to recognize client change talk and resistance in the context of ambivalence; and assist them to strengthen communication strategies with clients about health behaviour change.

Level 2 - Motivational Interviewing Training for Community of Practice Facilitators

Research shows that feedback and coaching are a critical component in developing MI proficiency.

This Level 2 session has been developed to support a core group of voluntary, self-selected participants to deepen their understanding of MI beyond the Level 1 training.
The group will explore ways in which they can facilitate MI Communities of Practice in the Vancouver Coastal Health Infant, Child, Youth, Adult and Older Adult programs.

Training includes developing practised familiarity with Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI); deepening participants’ knowledge and skills of MITI proficiencies; and providing practical experience in MI-style coaching and feedback.
