Tailored consultations and facilitation

Government of Yukon Women's Directorate

HCIP educators are currently delivering three training sessions on sex and gender differences, and girl and women-centred care, for Yukon government frontline workers in alcohol and drug-related services.

This multi-level awareness and training program is designed to address recommendations of the recent report Improving Treatment and Support for Yukon Girls and Women with Substance Use Problems and Addictions. (Produced by Nancy Poole, British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health and Gaye Hanson, Hanson and Associates.)

Recommendations were based on surveyed Yukon government workers who indicated they had a limited understanding of girl and women-centred care and wanted to learn more.

The report identified the need for skills development and practical advice on health promotion, prevention, harm reduction, treatment, aftercare and support programs, services and practices.

This training includes the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in a range of settings with girls/women at different readiness for change. It is linked to harm-reduction-oriented and trauma-informed care, and considers recommendations from a new National Treatment Strategy Working Group report.
