OUR EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS
General Information
Combining research and clinical experience, Nancy and Cristine engage service providers across BC in the translation of knowledge into practice in a way that emphasizes a women-centred, harm reduction and brief intervention approaches.
The education is being conducted in regional and provincial forums targeting service providers who work with pregnant women and women in childbearing years including Pregnancy Outreach Programs, MCFD workers, Aboriginal Services, public health, midwives, doulas, violence workers, nutritionists, addictions and mental health service providers etc.
Key objectives of the education include:
- Share updated research and resources on women, substance use and pregnancy
- Learn how to apply practical, evidence-based, brief motivational interventions in the context of pregnancy
- Assist health care providers in identifying and supporting women who use alcohol and other substances in childbearing years and in pregnancy
- Highlight and discuss the new BCRCP Guidelines for Alcohol Use in the Perinatal Period and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
|
The education can be in various forms, from a one hour grand rounds presentation, to a half-day or full-day community-based workshop. We will adapt the education to meet the needs and resources of the target groups and individual regions. Funding is available to support the education, including the cost of travel for participants.
If you would like more information about education opportunities please contact us.
Regional Education
Locations:
With the assistance of our Provincial Advisory Committee and consultations with numerous service providers, we have identified locations across the BC in which to hold sessions and worked with community champions to bring it all together. The support of the champions has been invaluable to the success of the education. Please see the following list of locations and dates for more information. Please note that there are a number of communities in which we do not have a champion/s yet. If you are interested or have questions about your community please contact Liz Horner.
Format:
The format that we have been using in communities is to conduct a day and a half of education for community service providers who work with pregnant women and women in childbearing years. We want to be as inclusive as possible and have many key players and stakeholders in the same room.
The first day consists of learning about women-centred, harm reduction and brief intervention frameworks for working with pregnant women who use substances, followed by more in depth clinical practice using motivational interviewing approaches in the context of pregnancy and translation of knowledge to practice.
The morning of the second day is focused on the needs of the community and can be used as an opportunity for community capacity building and ways to improve current policies and practices or an opportunity to share clinical challenges and work through them together.

Best Practices Review on Alcohol and Pregnancy: Emerging Findings and Recommendations |
Description: |
This webcast will outline the emerging findings from a recent review of the literature on evaluated approaches to screening, brief intervention and indepth
support for women with alcohol and related
health, income and social problems. An analysis of these findings will be presented alongside a
discussion of the limitations of current research in this area.
Similarly to the best practices review on smoking cessation interventions for pregnant and postpartum
girls and women (Expecting to Quit), a set of key program components and approaches will be described which have the support of research evidence.
A commentary will also be provided on how these components and approaches could be put into
practice most effectively when working with women drinkers, which links to the HCIP women-centred
framework, and addresses social determinants of health. |
