TOOL KITS AND MANUALS FOR PRACTICE
Native American Motivational Interviewing:
Weaving Native American and Western Practices
Venner, K.L., Feldstein, S. & Tafoya, N. (2006).
This 79-page manual is an example of a cultural adaptation of Motivational Interviewing (MI). It has received very positive feedback from Healthy Choices in Pregnancy training participants.
The manual was developed with Native American community members in New Mexico to improve the accessibility of MI within Native communities.
It brings together key MI elements translated through a cultural lens. The parallels between traditional approaches and the core spirit and principles of MI are evident throughout. Culturally-specific examples and case studies illustrate MI in practice.
This manual is applicable not only to a specific cultural context but as a helpful overall resource. The material is a well-organized tool for learning MI.
